Chapter 117 Somewhat special new Lightning Magic

Perhaps it was because this was the first time the high grade magician qualification exams were being held at the Magicians Guilds of the kingdoms, before they began the exam, the Lampuri Kingdom’s Magicians Guild held a small ceremony.

At the ceremony, not only did they read the decision made by the Sines Continent’s Magicians Guild, they also read out the rules of the high grade magician qualification exam.

From what president Palmes Eren read, Xu Yi noticed something worth noting.

Because not every country on the Sines Continent had a Great Magician present, those countries without Great Magicians were routed elsewhere. The high grade magicians of those countries that wanted to participate in the high grade magicians exam would be distributed to a nearby country with a Great Magician for their exam.

In this division, because the nearby Stantine Duchy didn’t have a Great Magician and adding in the fact that the Stantine Duchy was close to the Lampuri Kingdom, the Stantine Duchy and two small duchies that near the Lampuri Kingdom were all routed to the Lampuri Kingdom.

Hearing president Eren reading this, Xu Yi couldn’t help looking over the high grade magicians who had come for the exam. He wanted to find the magicians who had come from the Stantine Duchy for this exam.

But the magicians looked pretty much the same, so Xu Yi couldn’t tell based on their appearances.

After the ceremony, chairman Eren introduced the other four Great Magicians. He told everyone that they were lucky enough to have all five Great Magicians of the Lampuri Kingdom present for their exam.

“This is a rare honour! Because from this year forth, the guild will only ask one Great Magician to supervise the exam, so you won’t have the chance to show off your strength in front of five Great Magicians ever again. You have to properly seize this chance and show off your talents, understood?” President Eren asked in a loud voice.

The magicians all had excited faces as they shouted back, “Understood!”

Xu Yi was a bit frightened by their excitement and fervor because to him, Great Magicians weren’t that rare.

So he was unable to understand that for the other magicians, Great Magicians were the goals and targets of worship in their hearts. To be able to show off in front of five Great Magicians, that truly was a great honour.

After the ceremony was over, president Eren didn’t waste any time and immediately announced the beginning of the exam.

In short, the high grade magician exam was indeed like Great Magician Camilla had said before. The flow and content was basically the same as the low grade magician exam.

The exam also started with a written test, testing the magicians on their magic theoretical knowledge.

This naturally wasn’t that difficult for Xu Yi.

The difficult part which was what Great Magician Camilla also worried about was the high grade magic demonstration that came after the written exam.

Seeing the magicians in front of him demonstrate their high grade magic one by one, Xu Yi became a bit uncertain.

Although the method he chose to replace high grade magic was quite good and received the approval of Great Magician Camilla, it wasn’t really high grade magic. Perhaps if the other four Great Magicians noticed the truth, they might not approve of this.

Very soon, the magician before Xu Yi finished his demonstration and it was Xu Yi’s turn.

Great Magician Camilla looked at Xu Yi with a questioning gaze.

Xu Yi calmed down the anxiety in his heart and gave a nod to Great Magician Camilla, as he revealed a confident smile.

Great Magician Camilla calmed down slightly and gave Xu Yi an encouraging smile.

Great Magician Eisenkel naturally wasn’t worried. He was the same as the other three Great Magicians, looking at Xu Yi with curiosity.

In the magicians circle of the Lampuri Kingdom, Xu Yi was quite famous.

Other than the fact that he passed the Fifth Grade exam after participating in the certification exam for the first time last year, what made him more well known among magicians was the magic machines he studied.

Before Xu Yi, magicians who used magic application weren’t cared about by others. But after Xu Yi had invented the magic machines, magicians found that magic and machines coming together had practical applications.

The more important thing was that the magic machines made so much money!

There were many magicians who were filled with regret after learning of the Frestech Chamber of Commerce’s magic machines.

If they could use magic like this and invent magic machines before Xu Yi, wouldn’t they be able to earn large amounts of money?

Magicians were the same as normal people, they also loved money. They even loved money more than normal people because as long as they had enough money, they could buy enough magic materials and conduct magic experiments at will.

So in fact, the growth of each magician was supported by large amounts of money.

But even with many magicians entering the field of magic machines, they found that magic machines weren’t easy to invent at all.

There were countless magic machine companies that appeared in the Lampuri Kingdom, but before they received technical support from the Frestech Chamber of Commerce, there wasn’t a single company that could make magic machines that were on par with the Frestech Chamber of Commerce.

So the magicians of the Lampuri Kingdom were even more curious about Xu Yi.

This fellow, just how did he invent the magic machines?

President Eren’s thoughts were different from others. He was thinking about when Xu Yi had specially paid him a visit last year and suggested the magic patent act.

After a year of discussions, the Magicians Guild had already made up their mind to pass this act.

But there were certain details that weren’t agreed on in the Magicians Guild.

For example, the problem of charging fees. There were many magicians who didn’t agree to fees and some that said fees should be taken and it should be a large amount.

President Eren also supported charging fees and according to what he knew about the policy makers of the Magicians Guild, the final decision would include charging fees.

But as for how much…..that still needed to be discussed.

President Eren looked at Xu Yi who had given this idea and he thought about last year when Xu Yi said that the Frestech Chamber of Commerce would be willing to pay a high patent fee. The so-called “high”, just how “high” was it?

So the five Great Magicians watched as Xu Yi came onto stage. Because of the different thoughts they had, the stage fell into an unexpected short silence.

This strange situation made Xu Yi who was already the center of attention receive even more attention.

The other magicians saw that the five Great Magicians were all staring at Xu Yi and their hearts couldn’t help being filled with envy.

This Xu Yi had not just relied on those magic machines to open the Frestech Chamber of Commerce and earn all that money, now he had the attention of all five Great Magicians, he really had good luck.

After the awkward silence, president Eren reacted to the low reminder from the staff beside him. He gave a soft cough before letting Xu Yi begin his high grade magic demonstration.

Xu Yi gave a salute to the five Great Magicians before saying to the Magicians Guild staff on the side who was responsible for his test, “I excel in Wind Magic, so I will be demonstrating the high grade magic of Wind Magic, Lightning Magic.”

The staff member was a Ninth Grade Magician who nodded after hearing this, “Alright, please begin.” He moved back slightly after saying this and opened the surrounding magic barrier, leaving a large space for Xu Yi.

With everyone’s complicated gazes watching him, Xu Yi raised his hands slightly as the magic energy inside him began to quickly flow.

Other than Great Magician Camilla, the four surprised Great Magicians and some of the more powerful magicians around knit their brows.

Although Lightning Magic was advanced Wind Magic, Wind Magic was completely different from Lightning Magic. When activating Lightning Magic, the magician would use magic energy to gather the surrounding Lightning Elemental Energy to form a spell.

But with the flow of Xu Yi’s magic, the surrounding changes were with Wind Elemental Energy and there was no trace of Lightning Elemental Energy at all.

Other than that, even if it was Wind Elemental Energy, the fluctuations around were weak. Not to mention comparing it to Lightning Elemental Energy, just judging it as Wind Elemental Energy, Xu Yi’s magic power didn’t seem like a high grade spell.

However, moments later, the powerful magicians that could sense the elemental energy in the air suddenly had their expressions change at the same time.

This was because they suddenly felt that the Lightning Elemental Energy around Xu Yi had suddenly come alive.

And this liveliness didn’t seem like the orderly fluctuations of controlled magic, rather it wildly went in all directions like uncontrolled magic.

Great Magician Eisenkel couldn’t help knitting his brows as he said to Great Magician Camilla in a low voice, “It can’t be that he can’t control Lightning Magic, right? If it keeps going like this, I advise you to have him stop right away. Otherwise if it keeps going, perhaps there will be a problem since he can’t control the Lightning Elemental Energy.”

Great Magician Camilla shook his head, “It’s fine, this is a new Lightning Spell that he developed, it’s a bit special. There isn’t any danger.”

“New Lightning Spell?” Hearing Great Magician Camilla’s response, Great Magicians Eisenkel and the three Great Magicians with sharp ears who had heard the conversation between the two were shocked.

“He can actually develop a new Lightning Spell?” President Eren couldn’t help asking, “Could it be that his talent for magic is actually this great?”

Great Magician Camilla’s expression was a bit strange. After a pause, he gave a slightly forced nod, “Un, his talent is something that has always surprised me.”

Seeing Great Magician Camilla actually agree to this, the others looked at Xu Yi with eyes filled with shock.

It was already shocking enough that this fellow could go from the Fifth Grade to the Seventh Grade in a year, but he could actually develop a new Lightning Spell. It wasn’t even enough to describe his talent for magic as shocking anymore.

While everyone watched, Xu Yi completed his preparations for his spell. Everyone suddenly discovered that in the large exam space, all the Lightning Elemental Energy was wildly flowing.

Even the magicians participating in the exam standing outside the magic barrier could feel the change in the air and their expressions all changed.

Based on the intense fluctuations of this Lightning Spell, Xu Yi would be demonstrating quite the shocking Lightning Spell!

When everyone had this thought, there were countless arcs of beautiful bolts of lightning that appeared around Xu Yi, instantly filling the entire exam site with pure white light.

Chapter 118 Magic patent protection fee

After a while, everyone slowly recovered from the intense light.

After they clearly saw the scene of the exam site, everyone couldn’t help taking a breath of cold air.

In the space surrounded by the magic barrier, the entire ground had been turned black and there were several large and small holes created from lightning strikes. Looking at it from a distance, it could be described as devastated.

Just based on the damage to the ground, it could be seen how terrifyingly strong the Lightning Spell that Xu Yi had released was.

Everyone stared at Xu Yi who acted like nothing had happened with dumbfounded looks and no one could say a word.

“Ah!” At this time, the Magicians Guild staff in charge of the magic barrier suddenly called out in shock and everyone looked over at him.

President Eren looked at the staff member with knitted brows and asked in a blaming tone, “What is it? Making such a big deal?”

The staff member swallowed a mouthful of saliva before pointing at the magic barrier he was responsible with. He said with a look of disbelief, “Pre….President, the magic barrier…..it seems to be a bit damaged.”

“Ah?”

Everyone was stunned again.

The use of the barrier was to ensure that the magician undertaking the exam wouldn’t hurt the others outside when using their spell.

Because the ones participating today were Sixth to Ninth Grade Magicians, considering the might of the spells they used, president Eren had personally put down this barrier which was enough to block the might of a Ninth Grade Magician.

But now that Xu Yi had cast his Lightning Spell, this magic barrier was actually damaged!

Could it be…...The Lightning Spell that Xu Yi used had might that surpassed a Ninth Grade Magician?

President Eren stood up to inspect the barrier and he couldn’t help letting out a sigh of relief. He explained to everyone with a smile, “It’s nothing really. The Lightning Spell that Xu Yi used earlier was a bit special, so it countered out the magic barrier. It wasn’t damaged because the might of the spell was too powerful.”

Hearing this explanation, everyone let out a sigh of relief.

That’s good, that’s good, it wasn’t because Xu Yi’s spell was too strong.

If it really was because of this, that meant that he as a Seventh Grade Magician was stronger than a Ninth Grade Magician!

This kind of shocking thing was not something that everyone was willing to believe in.

Seeing that president Eren had finished inspecting the barrier, Xu Yi asked with a smile, “Then sir president, did I pass this high grade magic demonstration?”

President Eren looked at Xu Yi and couldn’t help smiling, “You used such an exaggerated spell, so if I don’t let you pass, do you think that the others would agree?”

Everyone couldn’t help giving a nod.

If Xu Yi can’t pass the high grade magic test like this, then based on what could those magicians that passed before pass?

Xu Yi laughed, “I felt that my control of the spell wasn’t too good, so I wasn’t certain if I would pass or not.”

“Alright, the control of the spell is another matter, but based on the might of the spell alone, you can pass.” President Eren looked at the other four Great Magicians, “After seeing Xu Yi’s high grade magic performance, I agree with him passing. What do you all think?”

Great Magician Camilla and Great Magician Eisenkel of course immediately agreed. The other two Great Magicians looked at each other before nodding in agreement.

So the high grade magic test that Great Magician Camilla was the most worried about was something that Xu Yi easily passed.

Only Great Magician Camilla looked at Xu Yi with a very strange expression that was kind of angry, while also finding it a bit funny.

There was another difference with the high grade magician and low grade magician exams, it was that since there were few high grade magicians, there wasn’t a need to only pick a certain amount of people to pass. As long as you were strong enough, it didn’t matter how many people could pass.

So although there was also the same actual combat test in the high grade magician exam, it wasn’t as strict as with the low grade magician exam.

When it came to the actual combat test, although Great Magician Camilla couldn’t come forth because he was Xu Yi’s teacher, Great Magician Eisenkell came forward to test Xu Yi.

The others naturally wouldn’t reject this. Great Magician Eisenkel pretended to inspect him and Xu Yi was already at the level of a Seventh Grade Magician whether it was his magic power or his spells, so he easily passed this.

After the exam was over, other than Xu Yi becoming a Seventh Grade Magician recognized by the Magicians Guild, there were forty six other magicians who had passed, which was over half of the participants.

There were only three people of the twelve from the Frestech Chamber of Commerce who passed. They were all Fifth Grade Magicians who became Sixth Grade Magicians.

Comparing it, almost no one could reach the average level.

But Xu Yi wasn’t disappointed with this result, rather he was pleasantly surprised.

High grade magicians had a good understanding of their own strength. Those researchers had said to Xu Yi that they didn’t feel like they were strong enough to pass, so Xu Yi didn’t think that they would pass the exam.

But now there were three researchers that had passed, so it really was a bit unexpected.

Then again, Xu Yi had achieved the advertisement effects he wanted. As for the other things that came, he didn’t care.

After the exam was over, the other magicians had all left the exam site and only Xu Yi was left here.

President Eren had Xu Yi and the other four Great Magicians come into a room at the back of the exam site where they held a conference.

As for the subject of this conference, it was on details of the patent act.

Xu Yi didn’t have the right to say anything on this issue and was just listening in the beginning.

However when it came to the topic of patent fees and how much they should set it at, president Eren actually asked Xu Yi for his opinion.

“Eh…..Your excellencies Great Magicians, as for this problem, I feel that there are two suitable methods.” Xu Yi said.

“There are actually two methods?” President Eren was a bit surprised, “Tell me about them.”

“The first one, it’s to not link patent fees with patent royalties. The Magicians Guild will charge a certain fee for each magical study which requires the use of a patent. As for how much, that will depend on the grade of importance of the magical research and each grade will have a set amount.”

“Then how should the amount be decided? There is a different degree of difficulty for magic research, so it isn’t right for them to have the same fee.” President Eren asked.

“It’s very simple. If there is a magician that wants to use patent information for a First Grade Spell, with how unimportant and not difficult it is, it will be regarded as first grade and only ten gold coins will be charged a year. But if there is another magician who is using the patent information for a Fifth Grade Spell, then it is much more important and difficult than before, so it will be recognized as fifth grade and fifty gold coins or more will be charged each year.” Xu Yi replied.

“But there’s another problem. If a magician is researching something rather important, but he can’t because he can’t afford the patent fee, is there still a meaning to this patent?” The one who asked this was one of the two Great Magicians Xu Yi didn’t know who was called Sommelier Torres.

Xu Yi revealed a faint smile, “Your excellency Great Magician Torres, if a magician can’t even afford a trivial patent fee, do you think they have enough funding to research a new kind of magic?”

Great Magician Torres was stunned before he couldn’t help giving a nod.

Indeed, magic research was something that spent quite a bit of money, especially if it was for new magic that didn’t have any magic theory to base on.

“Alright, Xu Yi, tell us about the other method.” President Eren urged him.

“Un, as for the second method, it’s to not let the Magicians Guild set the patent amount, but rather for the magician that submits the patent to set it themself.”

“Set it themselves?” The Great Magicians were all stunned, “How will it be set?”

“It’s very simple, if you feel that the information you’re setting a patent for is very important, then you’ll pay more to the Magicians Guild to set up this patent and the Magicians Guild will charge more for use of this patent. To put it in other words, to link patent fees and patent royalties together. The more you pay, the more compensation for use that others will have to pay.”

The Great Magicians carefully considered this for a while before Great Magician Eisenkel couldn’t help praising, “I like this method, it’s like earning money. If you want to earn more money, you need to invest more money.”

“But the one thing that I’m worried about is that as more and more magicians get patents for their research, when a magician wants to research a new kind of magic, wouldn’t they have to pay a large amount?” The one who asked this was the other Great Magician Xu Yi didn’t know, Como Telucci.

Xu Yi looked at him and thought that this should be one of the more conservative magicians of the Magicians Guild who were opposing the patent acts.

“Your excellency Great Magician Telucci, perhaps this worry of yours exists, but haven’t you noticed that even before the patent act, it already wasn’t easy for magicians to research new kinds of magic?” Xu Yi asked back.

“At least it’s better than paying to buy it, right?” Great Magician Telucci said.

“No, you’re wrong.” Xu Yi shook his head and said without any politeness, “Actually, most magicians would treasure their researched new magic and put it in their personal collection, so they won’t easily share it. So after all these years, the reason why the level of the continent’s magicians didn’t increase that much was because even though magicians developed new kinds of magic and new understanding towards magic, most of them aren’t willing to share them and will only teach them to their few disciples. As for the other magicians, they missed the chance to learn about this new research and these new discoveries.”

Great Magician Camilla gave a sigh and said with a nod, “Xu Yi is right. I have always felt pity for this situation. If everyone took out their research to share, the level of the magic on the continent would surpass the level of the elves in the past. But after I met some elves through Xu Yi, I’ve found that after several thousand years, our human magic still has many aspects that can’t compare to elven magic.”

The other Great Magicians were all silent.

As Great Magicians, their eyes were different from low grade magicians.

As for the limit on human magic that Xu Yi talked about, they were more clear on this compared to Xu Yi.

Xu Yi revealed a smile and continued, “So, Great Magician Telucci, compared to not being able to learn even if you want to, using money to buy it is already a large improvement. The Magicians Guild can’t expect every magician to be selfless and share their magic research with everyone. Then you might as well tell the magicians to sell their magic research. I think that with the power of money, not only will it convince many magicians to sell their research, it will urge many magicians to put more energy into researching magic because with the support of money, they will be able to conduct all kinds of magic experiments.”

“Pa!” Great Magician Eisenkel suddenly slapped the table and said with a look of joy, “Those are the words I’ve been waiting to say. You all accused me of falling into an abyss of money, but have you ever thought about how difficult it was for us to become Great Magicians? With the support of enough money, we might have become Great Magicians even faster!”

Regarding Great Magician Eisenkel’s words, the other four Great Magicians thought about it and found they couldn’t refute it.

For magicians to increase their strength, other than having talent, the most important thing was constantly researching magic.

But researching magic required money. Without the money to do experiments, naturally one would progress slower than others, this was a widely known fact among magicians.

After a period of silence, president Eren said with a soft cough, “Everyone should have no problems passing this patent act. What we need to decide now is which one of the two methods that Xu Yi mentioned will we use.”

The other four Great Magicians looked at each other before Great Magician Eisenkel said, “I support the second method.”

Great Magician Camilla said that both methods were fine, he didn’t have any opinions.

Great Magician Torres and Great Magician Telucci didn’t give any opinions, they felt that both of Xu Yi’s methods were very reasonable and both could be reported to the Magicians Guild’s headquarters, representing the opinion of the Lampuri Kingdom branch.

“Very good, we’ll report both methods.” President Eren made the decision before turning to say to Xu Yi, “Xu Yi, I have to trouble you to help me and make a report for both methods. I’ll submit them together to the headquarters.”

Xu Yi naturally agreed to this.

This thing that would leave his mark at the Magicians Guild headquarters and would greatly affect the Frestech Chamber of Commerce, how could he give up this chance?
